Adoption Procedure & Fees

Ready to Adopt? Read more information below about our adoption process.

Adopt a Cat Today! Our adoption process has changed. Please read the below for more information.

Due to our current staffing shortage, we may not be able to accommodate unscheduled walk-in visits to view our dog and cats because we are focused on caring for our animals. If you would like to meet a dog or cat, we ask that you please complete an online adoption questionnaire and an adoption counselor will be in touch to schedule an appointment. You will not be able to adopt an animal without an appointment, and approved adoption questionnaire on file.

However, if you have any questions about Save-A-Pet, or our adoption process, please feel free to come in to the facility and speak to an adoption counselor in our lobby.

Links to both our Dog Adoption Online Questionnaire and our Cat Adoption Online Questionnaire are below. Alternatively, you can download the printable version, complete it, and email it to adoptions@saveapetil.org. After your questionnaire is received and reviewed, one of our adoption counselors will contact you. Please allow up to 3-4 business days for this process to be completed as we are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The adoption counselor will schedule a date and time for you to enter the facility to interact with the cat or dog. They will also provide further details regarding your appointment, such as what documentation you should bring, family members that must accompany you, etc.

Current Safety Protocols in Place:

  • Please note our business hours on the homepage of our website.
  • Please sanitize your “paws” as you enter the facility. A sanitizing station has been placed by the front door.
  • In order to promote social distancing, we are also operating at a limited guest capacity inside the facility. If the facility is at the maximum guest capacity, we may ask you to wait in your car until another guest leaves.

Past Adopters
If you have adopted in the past two years, you do not need to complete a questionnaire (unless you adopted a dog and are now looking at a cat or vice-versa). However,  you must still call 847-740-7788 or email Adoption staff at adoptions@saveapetil.org to schedule an appointment.

Prospective Pet Interactions

Pet interactions are done after a questionnaire has been submitted, and in designated visiting areas. Interactions typically last from 15 to 30 minutes. You may have to wait for an interaction room or staff person to become available, and we appreciate your patience in advance.

All family or household members who will live with the pet may be asked to come meet the potential adoptive dog or cat at the adoption center (at Save-A-Pet staff’s discretion).  All children under the age of 12 are required to meet the potential adoptive dog or cat at the adoption center in all situations.

Current Adoption Promotions

Single Cat House Promo

The cats included in this promotion are ones who prefer to be the only cat in the home yet adore the attention from humans. Ideal homes for these candidates would have no additional cats or dogs with no plans of adopting another cat or a dog for the foreseeable future. However, if we feel that a cat may thrive in a particular household, exceptions may be made.

The adoption fee for cats included in this promotion will be half off, but our normal $12.00 fee for the one-year rabies vaccine for the Lake County residents will still be included in the price.

Home for the Holidays

From November 11, through December 31, the adoption fee for all cats and dogs over one year old who have been at the shelter for six months or longer will be 50% off! If an animal qualifies for this promotion, that information will be found in their bio.

Please contact our adoptions staff at adoptions@saveapetil.org for more information.
