Volunteer

What can I do?

Volunteers are always needed to help with daily shelter life and our many projects. No specific experience or vocation is required to help Save-A-Pet. The following is a partial list of tasks for which we need help:

Dog Walkers

Walk shelter dogs. Help them enjoy the outdoors, reduce their stress in the shelter, and become better future pets. Come on your own schedule. Optional: work with longer-term special needs residents.

Cat Room Care

Care for cats. Help them reduce their stress in the shelter and become better future pets. Come on your own schedule. Optional: work with longer-term special needs residents.

Adoption Counselors

Assist busy staff adoption counselors by working with prospective adopters within our policies and guidelines to assure the best possible match between the family and our dogs and cats. Pre-requisite: our dog walker or cat room care training. A training class is offered with some scheduling commitment required.

Greeters

Provide greetings and help prospective adopters have a pleasant and rewarding visit to our shelter.

Attend and/or Organize Events

Participate in many kinds of community awareness and adoption events such as: Earth Day, pet shows, retail store shows, Senior Days, nursing home visits, schools, etc.

Fund-raising Projects and Events (attend and/or organize)

Tag days, Pet-Athlon (Walk for pets. Held in September), garage sales, auctions, craft shows, etc.

Paws on the Path Pet-athlon

A walk/run for people and their pets held in May. For volunteer opportunities and more information check out the "Paws on the Path" page!

Foster Care

Cats, dogs, puppies and kittens may need special care until they are ready for adoption. Older animals may need care for medical situations or for the rest of their days. If you would like more information about foster care and can meet fostering requirements, please call 847-740-7788, ext. 100. The shelter will provide all food and supplies and pay for all approved medical expenses at cooperating veterinarians. The need is great!

Save-A-Pet Thrift and Gift Shop (Skokie)

Our Thrift and Gift Shop on Oakton St. in Skokie, run entirely by volunteers, is an important source of funds for us. Please help us keep this shop going.

Writers

Contribute newspaper feature articles, newsletters, special fund-raising letters, etc.

Adoption Center Maintenance

A variety of repair and maintenance work is always needed for the safety and well being of the animals and the people who work with them.

Volunteer Development Team

Volunteers are essential to keep our shelter operating. Help to recruit, track, support, communicate with, and train volunteers. Work may be done at the shelter and at outside events.
