Homeless, sick and scared and....somewhere to go!

Each of our residents comes in with their own story and it was no different for Legend and Destiny. When a teenager discovered three very young kittens surrounding their deceased mom, she immediately scooped them all up. One of her friends took one of them while she brought the other two home, apparently unbeknownst to her mother. It didn’t take long for them to be “discovered”. They initially had decided to keep the little boy called Legend, and brought Destiny, his sister, to Save-A-Pet.

Her little eyes looked a bit different and our vet technician immediately noticed that she was actually missing her upper eyelids. They also found out that she had intestinal parasites and a skin infection that requires weekly medicated baths. Save-A-Pet then called the family to let them know that they needed to take her brother to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked out. Instead, they decided to surrender him and Legend got reunited with his sister. It was as if they had never been apart and immediately snuggled together. Legend is also missing one upper eyelid. As a result, they need eye drops to keep their eyes lubricated.

After the trauma of losing their mom and not quite understanding everything that was happening to them, they are now safe, getting all the medical care they need and of course they are very much loved as if they were our own. While they are currently not available for adoption, Save-A-Pet was there when they needed rescue. They have a home with us until they are ready to find their own family. This wouldn’t have been possible without the continued generosity of everyone and we are happy to share one of our many success stories with you. With much gratitude and thanks for allowing us to continue our no-kill message - Happy Holidays!

True Grit: A Story of Rescue

If not for Save-A-Pet, Grit would not have survived. A week prior to Grit's arrival at Save-A-Pet, his previous family purchased him through an online advertisement. The family was told that Grit was 5 months old, current on all vaccinations, and generally healthy. After about a week, Grit's family realized something was very wrong with their new puppy. Grit was brought first to a vet, and then quickly to Save-A-Pet on the afternoon of August 12th. His family came to the front desk, and asked if Save-A-Pet could help their new puppy. He had just been diagnosed with Parvo, and they could not afford treatment as they already had two large dogs and two very small kids. From Grit's family: "We cannot afford hospitalization for Grit. If Save-A-Pet can save his life, we would appreciate it."

When staff came out to the family's car to check on Grit, they found him nearly motionless in a pool of his own vomit. Grit could not even lift his head, and green discharge was coming out of his nose and mouth. Save-A-Pet staff were shocked at how far his illness had already progressed. Through the help of staff and volunteers, the family and Grit were escorted to the local emergency vet, AETC in Grayslake. Grit began to fight for his life. The first few days were very tense, and touch and go. He remained at AETC for over a week, when Grit was transferred to another vet to examine head and neck tremors. He continues to recover slowly but steadily from the Parvo illness, regaining strength in his limbs and even putting on a little weight. Grit will recover in foster care for several months.

Grit's spirit is very strong, which is inspiring to all around him. There is love in his eyes. This is why Save-A-Pet provides for dogs' and cats' safety, medical care and emotional comfort at all costs. We strive to alleviate their suffering on all fronts. We value the lives of all rescued animals equally. If our partner veterinarians determine that a new resident requires significant treatment for an illness or injury, we provide for that care. In doing so, our dogs and cats have the greatest opportunity for a second chance at life and love.

Guardian Angels make miracles happen!

Save-A-Pet’s no-kill mission promises unconditional love and life for all dogs & cats; regardless of the special circumstances they may face. Some animals may be older; some may have a medical condition. Some animals may be of an unpopular breed, some may have been abused, and in need of more time to learn to trust people again.
