Save-A-Pet Foster Program

Welcome to the Save A Pet Foster Page

What is the Save A Pet Foster Program ?

The foster care program enables Save-A-Pet to meet the special needs of the most vulnerable homeless animals - animals that are terminal, ill, pregnant, very young, recovering from surgery or some other medical procedure, elderly, or just in need of a second chance.

What type of fostering is right for you?

There are three types of fosters in the Save-A-Pet Foster Program, permanent, permanent (with incentives), and temporary.

Temporary fosters are those who wish to help those cats and dogs who may be recovering from surgery, pregnant cats and dogs who are soon to give birth, bottle fed babies and babies that are too young for adoption.

Permanent fosters are those who those who would like to give a sick, senior, or terminally ill cat or dog a retirement home and provide medical care.

Permanent (with incentives) fosters are those who would like to give a senior or a long-term resident a chance to finally live in a home. Most of the cats and dogs do not have any medical issues. Some are seniors, some have behavioral issues, and some just continue to get overlooked. For these dogs and cats, Save-A-Pet can provide yearly vaccinations done at Save-A-Pet at our cost (estimated around $25 compared to over $100 at most local vet offices). Any needed medications, supplements, or prescription food (with a vetŐs prescription) can be ordered for you by Save-A-Pet at our cost. This applies to only those conditions existing at the time the cat or dog is taken into foster.

How do you become a licensed Save-A-Pet Foster?

If you are interested in becoming a Save-A-Pet Foster you will complete a Save A Pet foster application as well as dog or cat adoption application (this is for screening and interview purposes only). Once approved you will pay a $25.00 fee for your license through the Illinois Department of Agriculture and attend a training class before your foster is taken home. A foster committee Co-Chair will be available 7 days a week to assist in questions or concerns and to help those who the permanent special needs fosters and to those with cats or dogs with medical issues.

Any and all questions may be e mailed to fosterinfo@saveapetil.org.
